From The President's Pen
Greetings to you all.

As we head into the silly season there is lots going on at Rotary. On 4 November Allan and I attended a meeting of the Capital and Coast Rotary Clubs. These essential meetings under the guidance of Rotary Group Leader, Tony Robinson, enable the clubs to discuss their projects and to coordinate their activities. Some of the clubs have very ambitious plans and are always looking for support from other clubs. This is a trend that will intensify in the new year.

Tawa are looking to raise $330,000 to purchase lifting equipment for 3 Life Flight Trust planes. Porirua are looking to raise significant funds at their gala dinner towards the building of an inclusive playground for children with intellectual and physical disabilities in the Porirua region. For details see the article later in this bulletin.

Kudos to Tony for taking on such a big job. We will see him at our next big event on 26 November. Our DG Jocelyn Hogg will also be attending as will members from the Mt Victoria Club. Please make every effort to attend this full dinner meeting. This will be a great opportunity to socialise with Mt Victoria and to get the latest news from the top as Rotary under goes structural changes. We will also hear from some of the RYPEN candidates we recently sponsored. As always feel free to bring a guest and give them a taste of Rotary.

The meeting after that will be our AGM, arguably our most important meeting where we must address the challenges facing the club.

This will be followed by our Christmas function on 14/12/24, a chance to relax and to welcome our president elect Allan Frazer at our traditional changeover. Check out our forward evens in this bulletin as events start to emerge for the new year.

Best wishes, Phil

Christmas Is Fast Approaching
Christmas is now officially even closer! As per our messages at our last Club meeting, we need all our Club members to help push pudding sales for a successful outcome this year. This includes your support to promote through work outlets, put a flyer on your notice board, in schools and libraries and around shopping areas. Please contact Phil if you need any promotional material.

Member support for our sales efforts has been thin. If you haven’t put your name down on the roster to help sell Christmas  puddings in the Karori Mall on 7th and 14 December, please contact David Watt. Even if you can only spare an hour every bit helps.

We also need some help setting up and selling puddings on the afternoon of 7 December (4:00 - 6:00pm) at the Christmas Carols event in Ben Burn Park. David also has the roster for this.

This is an important fund raiser for the club. Let’s show our strong support for this Rotary fund raiser!

Charity Dinner On Thursday 5 December

From Our Last Meeting
President Phil again chaired a very informative and member engaging meeting, even though there were only 9 of us present. Setting the standard for these light eats discussions on Club programmes and projects President Phil started sharp at 6.10pm with drinks in hand to get things rolling.

Note for future members of this kind as agreed, members must be in attendance by 6pm to have a drink and be ready for business by 6.10pm, no later. We were finished by just after 7pm. It is that quick. You must be on time.

Matters Discussed

  • Christmas puddings sales strategy including rosters for 7th and 14th December and Ben Burn Christmas Carols evening on 7 December
  • Progress with our social media initiatives via Belinda Robins
  • Getting a President-Elect for the Club for 2025-2026 starting in July next
  • A meeting on 18 November encouraging the formation of a new Rotoract Club in Wellington
  • Club support for funding a St Mary’s Church Debt Counsellor for people in need in the local community over and above the resources available through the CAB
  • Support at the Khandallah Fair on 8 December
  • A community fund raiser for Lifting the Lid Project around the Basin Reserve on 15 February 2025
  • An update on the Birdwood Reserve Envirtonmental project to create a bush walk way into Zealandia, activities of Karori Kaitiaki so far and our Club’s insistence on a Memorandum of Understanding for the project being established with clearly defined financial and other management responsibilities

RYLA
The Club is continuing to make progress to nominate a candidate for RYLA in January 2025. Alister Irwin and David Watt are planning to interview a candidate this coming weekend.

We wish them well in the hope that we can continue to give support for this important Rotary Leadership programme to advance youth leadership skills and future opportunities.

The Board will hopefully confirm our support for the 2025 course at Forest Lakes in January at our next board meeting.

Please give our Club the names of people you may feel would benefit from RYLA and the Club will follow up. Time is short, but we want to give this programme our best shot this summer.
