Anna Reed
Anna Reed, Samuel  Marsden School attendee at this year’s National Science Forum in Auckland in January who spoke to the Club on 12 March. Pictured with President Jim Johnson, and Past President, Allan Frazer.

Anna Reed gave the club a lively presentation on her experiences at the National Science Forum at Auckland University in January. She said it gave her a lot of confidence, built great team spirit and cooperation in many tasks that each team had to carry out. Anna came to New Zealand for her schooling from the UK . She said there were 170 students at the Forum in Auckland, getting up at 6 a.m. to face the day and turning in late after full on team work.
Developing collaborative learning skills and putting it all together for the benefit of the team is a huge part of the Science Forum. She said it became an important showcase to help each student with their thoughts for tertiary study and the leadership requirements they would need for later in life.

Anna is taking a gap year next year from school and plans to work in the United States at disabled children summer camps and then to look at tertiary studies at Auckland or Massey for a Bachelor of Nursing degree. The many questions fielded by Anna showed her competence, continuing a line of strong participants from Samuel Marsden at the National Science Forum.

Project Discussion
The Club then devoted some time to discussing challenges put to Rotary by Paul Atkins, CE of Zealandia who spoke at our previous meeting. President Jim led the discussion around options of assisting Zealandia with marketing and telling their story; of looking at an economic analysis of Zealandia’s operations in Wellington – seen as more of a task for the Council and other parties to assist with; help with the preparation of their annual report; help with the planning and implementation of Zealandia’s 25 year celebrations in 2020; and a range of volunteering physical tasks to be discussed further with the Club.
President Jim indicated that he would circulate these ideas to the full membership for feedback. Meantime members at the meeting indicated they would like to arrange to visit the Discovery Area worked on by Rotary some years ago for an update and consideration of potential projects for further Club involvement. The Club noted a possible project initiative to provide accommodation facilities at Zealandia for students and others taking advantage of night time tours.
