From The President's Pen
Hi to you all,

With great sadness we record the passing of a great legend in our Club this week, Doug Langford, a giant in the Rotary world in the capital city and admired by everyone who met and knew him well. We are devastated at the loss of Doug after a short illness.

His passing this past week has left our Club and all his friends in Rotary absolutely shocked. His achievements have been huge, the respect he earned and his care and support of others not only in Rotary but in all walks of life have been very special. We all looked up to Doug through our friendship with him. He gave so much to our communities of interest, over decades of service and led by example, always giving 100 percent. True service above self. More in our bulletin.

It was unfortunate that the Club couldn’t meet on 11 June due to a large number of apologies and guest speaker illness. Here’s hoping for a good number to attend our projects and programmes discussion meeting at Marsden on 25 June.

July will be one of our busiest months, including
  • Wednesday 3 July, a business breakfast, speaker Chris Bishop at the Wellington Club
  • Saturday 6 July, our Rotary changeover, (please RSVP to David)
  • Friday-Saturday 12-13 July, the community book fair with Karori Lions
  • Sunday 21 Julyour ‘Lifting the Lid’ fund raiser Quiz Night at Le Petit Lapin
We won’t have a Club meeting on 9 July because of all this activity, but there will be a dinner meeting on 23 July with Jo Lambert CEO of the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand.

And don’t forget District Changeover on Saturday 29 June, being held at the Horowhenua District Council, Oxford St, Levin.

See you all Tuesday.
Regards
President Jay

Vale To A Rotary Legend
With deep sadness and disbelief  we record the passing of a special friend and servant of people with the loss of charter member, past President and multi sapphire Paul Harris Fellow and long serving treasurer in Karori Rotary, Doug Langford, after a short illness.

We had all hoped for Doug’s recovery following recent hospitalisation in the hope that he would be back with us after some rest back at Malvina Major. This week’s news of his passing has been a big shock to his many friends throughout the Rotary world, in Probus and through his many Trust interests. Doug was a giant in our Rotary community, helping to launch the achievements we have made through over 42 years of service since inception of the Club in 1982 as a charter member, with several others who remain with our Club.

Doug set high principles which have guided our Club through this time. These principles and service have earned the Rotary Club of Karori high respect in the Rotary International community and as a leading club in the capital city.  Doug was a multi sapphire pin Paul Harris Fellow. He received a CNZM Honour in 2003 for services to manufacturing in New Zealand and the community. He chaired many community organisations and Trusts including the Marsden and Chelsea Trusts for dementia patients and earned the highest respect for his humanity, care and help for people whenever it was asked.

He was a wonderful mentor to all newcomers, he would readily offer advice to all, to friends and others he didn’t know well, he did this with great pride and with a good touch of humour.

He set high standards in all endeavours and carried on treasurer responsibilities for the club in the same way he undertook financial management of many other organisations that he watched over in his professional career and in private life.

Despite his own health setbacks, Doug never showed any complaint, he got on with the spirit  of service above self, at risk to his own well-being, to ensure good outcomes in his numerous areas of interest. He gave so much to family and friends who were the joy of his life, to his beloved wife Alison, in her own time of health needs and to others who looked to his support for their betterment.

Our club feels at a great loss of a giant in Rotary.  We extend to Alison and family, Lester, Conwae, Suzette and Tristram, their partners and families our love and deepest sympathy at this time.
