In March 2015, a major cyclone struck the islands of Vanuatu. Large numbers of people were displaced, with housing damaged or destroyed and crops lost. Rotary swung into action and despatched 1000 Rotary Emergency Response Kits, which were distributed in hard-hit areas. Each Emergency Response Kit contains basic equipment to allow a family to construct a simple shelter and clothe themselves. The kits also include tools, first aid supplies, and household items. Rotary Karori contributed funds for several Emergency Response Kits and members of the public donated additional funds when the Club displayed the Kits at the 2015 Karori Karnival. Rotary also supports ShelterBox, an international disaster relief organisation that provides shelter and lifesaving equipment, to families who have been displaced or made homeless by natural and other disasters.
