On 24 November 2013, the Memorial Park construction site in Wellington was opened to allow members of the public to walk through the 300m long trench that will ultimately carry traffic underground below the Memorial Park. Rotary Karori saw the opportunity to carry out a collection during the three hours for which the trench was open, with the proceeds to go to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Central Philippines, which caused more than 5700 fatalities and enormous property damage. Club members manned the entrances to the trench under a Rotary banner and collected donations from the hundreds of walkers, many of them families.
