Despite the unfortunate cancellation of the D9940 conference Liz and I decided to head off and join the celebration of 100 years of Rotary in Whanganui.
Whanganui is a town I have always liked and after arriving on Friday we were able to spend a little time wandering up and down Victoria Avenue before dinner at one of the local Indian restaurants.
The weather had improved a little on Saturday so we headed out to a coffee morning hosted by the club at the War Memorial Centre. After the meet and greet we headed off to the museum. It must be 60+ years since I've been there. I think it's always been recognised as an important museum. It has been vastly streamlined and is a must see attraction for any visitor. In the afternoon we headed out to Patea. The town has a rich history and although it's in decline it is well worth the trip.
Saturday evening was the gala dinner hosted by the club with President Dot McKinnon leading the proceedings. We were placed at a table with other Wellingtonians; Nick and Christine Hurley, Anthony and Nicky Scott and Julie Haggie. The club gave a very good account of it's 100 years followed by an after dinner speech by retired judge Dugald Matheson and the presentation of a community PHF by Dennis Brown.
